We the People: The Citizen & the Constitution (Level 1)

We the People: The Citizen & the Constitution teaches upper elementary students about civics, government, and active citizenship. Students explore the history and principles of American constitutional democracy through critical thinking and cooperative learning. The program culminates with a unique and engaging activity: the simulated congressional hearing.

The fourth edition of We the People explores the history and principles of constitutional democracy in the United States. The text features updated content and full-color graphics, including a new section on the United States as a democratic republic.

As with all levels of We the People, the textbook is supported by an online student resource center.

The We the People Teacher's Guide for upper elementary students provides section-by-section instructions on how to teach the curriculum:

  • Lesson Overviews
  • Objectives
  • Preparation & Teaching Materials
  • Teaching Procedures
  • Optional Activities
  • Thirty-Question Multiple-Choice Test

Written by teachers, for teachers, the new guide includes culminating performance assessment materials and suggested reading for students and teachers. As with all levels of We the People, the teacher's guide is supported by an online student resource center.

About

CCE LogoThe Center for Civic Education is a national, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to cultivating an informed and thoughtful citizenry committed to democratic principles and actively engaged in the practice of democracy. We do this primarily through our flagship programs, We the People and Project Citizen, but we also provide high-quality, inquiry-driven curricular programs that bring civic learning to life. The Center additionally equips educators with professional learning that builds confidence and capacity to teach civics with depth and relevance, unlocks students’ civic agency by creating opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge and skills, and share their voices through simulated hearings and other public forums. These initiatives build a national community committed to strengthening civic understanding and participation for all and root everything in decades of research and evidence. Learn more.
