Lesson Purpose

Some parts of the Constitution are clear and easy to understand. Other parts are much more difficult. What is the best way to decide what the Constitution means? In this lesson, you will learn about some of the more common approaches the U.S. Supreme Court has used to decide what the Constitution means.

Lesson Objectives

When you finish this lesson, you should be able to describe common approaches the U.S. Constitution has used to decide the meaning of the Constitution, and give arguments in favor or against each of these methods.

Lesson Terms

Second Amendment
Part of the Bill of Rights added to the Constitution in 1791. The Amendment says "A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
