Civic Media Literacy: A Professional Learning Workshop

In today’s rapidly evolving media landscape, educators play a critical role in helping students navigate information, discern reliable sources for credible information from misinformation, and understand the connections between media and democracy. The Center for Civic Education and the National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE) are partnering to offer Civic Media Literacy, a professional learning workshop designed to equip teachers with strategies for integrating media literacy into civic education.

This interactive session will explore:

  • How misinformation and media bias impact civic engagement and democratic participation.
  • Practical classroom strategies for teaching students to critically analyze news and social media.
  • The role of media in shaping public opinion, policy, and political discourse.
  • Hands-on activities and resources that help students become informed, responsible digital citizens.

About Us

The National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE) has been dedicated to advancing media literacy education since 1997. Now the largest media literacy membership organization around the globe, NAMLE unites a community of educators who help expand media literacy in both formal and informal learning environments. The NAMLE vision is to help individuals of all ages develop the habits of inquiry and skills of expression that they need to be critical thinkers, effective communicators, and active citizens.
The Center for Civic Education is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to promoting an enlightened and responsible citizenry committed to democratic principles and actively engaged in the practice of democracy in the United States and other countries. The Center's programs are designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions they need to be informed and engaged citizens.

Program Objectives and Benefits

  • Participants will learn strategies for integrating media literacy into civic education to help students effectively navigate information.
  • Participants will learn about NAMLE’s definition of media literacy (access, analyze, evaluate, create, act), and why those terms are important for supporting students as they grow as citizens in a democratic society.
  • Participants will understand the role of media literacy in fostering informed citizenship and its connection to constitutional democracy, with practical approaches for teaching these concepts in the classroom.
  • Participants will explore a lesson by the Center for Civic Education on the compelling question, “Can I identify reliable media sources?” where they will learn more about the Center’s method for ESCAPEing Misinformation and the 5E Inquiry model.

Professional Development

The Center has offered high-quality educator professional development for decades. Today, we provide such opportunities through our partners in several states in addition to organized Center events, self-paced online courses, and special webinars.
