Nonviolence Educates and Reforms: Six Principles of Nonviolence, Part 4

This is 60-Second Civics from the Center for Civic Education. I’m Mark Gage.
Today we discuss Martin Luther King Jr.'s fourth principle of nonviolence—that nonviolence educates and reforms.
King believed that the experience of acting nonviolently in the face of injustice transformed people. However, according to King, the transformative potential of nonviolence did not end with its practitioners.
While acknowledging that effecting change through nonviolence takes time and great personal sacrifice, King believed that opponents of justice were eventually educated and reformed as a result of being confronted with nonviolent resistance.
He believed that an individual’s conscience could be stirred by the suffering of those who did not strike back.
Pointing to the results of the nonviolent resistance in India, King maintained that education and reformation of opponents makes reconciliation a reality.
