[INTRO MUSIC]
Welcome to 60-Second Civics from the Center for Civic Education. I’m Mark Gage.
Today we discuss Martin Luther King Jr.'s third principle of nonviolence, which holds that nonviolence seeks to defeat injustice, not people.
Nonviolent action, King said, is directed at eliminating evil, not destroying an evildoer.
King insisted that the struggle for civil rights was not a struggle between white people and African Americans. Instead, it was a struggle "between justice and injustice."
He wrote that victory in the movement for civil rights will not be merely a victory for the people involved in the struggle, but a "victory for justice, a victory for good will, a victory for democracy."
That’s all for today’s podcast.
60-Second Civics, where civic education only takes a minute.
