Respecting Individual Worth and Human Dignity: Building Your Skills as a Citizen, Part 3

Welcome to 60-Second Civics from the Center for Civic Education. I’m Mark Gage.

One key to fulfilling your responsibilities as an American citizen is to respect the value and human dignity of all people.

This means treating other people with respect.

One way to do this is to truly listen to their opinions.

Actively listening is part of civil discourse; that is, a reasoned discussion in which every person has the opportunity to speak about any question, and in which no individual’s voice can drown out the ideas of others.

Civil behavior toward other people in the community is part of what makes a democracy work.

This is part of the broader value of recognizing and protecting the rights and interests of other people.

Majority rule is an essential concept of a representative democracy because there needs to be a way to settle disputes and decide issues.

However, the right of the majority to decide political issues has to be balanced against the rights of people who are on the losing side of any vote.

You can do your part by carefully considering the rights and interests of both sides of a political argument and by asking yourself whether any candidate, policy, or proposed legislation truly advances the common good.

This episode was made possible by the support of T-Mobile.
