Being an Active Citizen: Active Citizenship, Part 2

Welcome to 60-Second Civics from the Center for Civic Education. I’m Mark Gage.

Active citizenship means getting involved in the life of your community and nation so that you can help determine the country's future.

One irony of our hyperconnected digital age is that people can feel isolated, but there are many ways to get involved.

First, figure out what issues are most important to you.

Is it the environment? Health care? Abortion? Homelessness? Gun violence? Racism?

For each of these issues, there are groups you can join that advocate for solutions.

Second, when considering which organization to join, ask yourself whether you would prefer working with religious or secular groups.

Third, research the organization's history.

Have they been around for a long time? What is their track record?

You might search for news about the organization from reputable sources before taking the plunge.

Does this group have a good reputation? What do they have to say about the issues you care about?

When French historian Alexis de Tocqueville visited the United States in the 1830s, he was impressed that Americans got together to solve their own problems.

You can honor this legacy by getting involved.

After all, our nation's future depends on you.

This episode was made possible by the support of T-Mobile.

60-Second Civics, where civic education only takes a minute.

About

CCE LogoThe Center for Civic Education is a national, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to cultivating an informed and thoughtful citizenry committed to democratic principles and actively engaged in the practice of democracy. We do this primarily through our flagship programs, We the People and Project Citizen, but we also provide high-quality, inquiry-driven curricular programs that bring civic learning to life. The Center additionally equips educators with professional learning that builds confidence and capacity to teach civics with depth and relevance, unlocks students’ civic agency by creating opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge and skills, and share their voices through simulated hearings and other public forums. These initiatives build a national community committed to strengthening civic understanding and participation for all and root everything in decades of research and evidence. Learn more.
