We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution teaches critical thinking skills through the lens of the history and principles of constitutional democracy. Programs at the middle school and high school level each provide opportunities for students to engage one another to better understand the nation?s history, as well as the practical application of the ideas behind American democracy. The curriculum focus for the We the People Summer Institute is divided into six units of study. Unit 1 ? What are the Philosophical and Historical Foundations of the American Political System? Unit 2 - How did the Framers create the Constitution? Unit 3 - How has the Constitution been changed to further the ideals contained in the Declaration of Independence? Unit 4 - How have the values and principles embodied in the Constitution shaped American institutions and practices? Unit 5 What rights does the Bill of Rights protect?
Unit 6 What Challenges might face American Constitutional democracy in the Twenty-First Century?

The four days of professional development will be divided equally over the six units of study led by Scholars along with presentation of instructional strategies from mentor teachers. The participants will also take part in mini hearings in preparation for their Mock Congressional Hearings on the final day.
